Grammar tip
EnglishHow the item works: this lesson trains a common kind of easy listening item: a very short everyday recording (a phone message, an announcement in a station, a short dialogue in a shop) in which you must catch ONE piece of information: a time, a price, a date, a phone number, a room or platform number. In items like these, the four options can look almost the same (9 h 15, 9 h 45, 8 h 45, 9 h 30), so the question tests your ear for numbers. In the TCF, each recording is played only once, so be ready before it starts. BEFORE: read the question and the options. Find what changes between them: that is exactly what you must catch. Say the options to yourself in French (« neuf heures et quart », « soixante-dix »). DURING: wait for the END of the number. « Soixante… » can become soixante-dix-sept (77); « quatre-vingt… » can be anything from 80 to 99. Remember: 70 = 60 + 10, 80 = 4 × 20, 90 = 4 × 20 + 10. « Et quart » = :15, « et demie » = :30, « moins le quart » = 15 minutes BEFORE the hour: « neuf heures moins le quart » = 8 h 45. 14 h = 2 p.m., 20 h = 8 p.m. Dates use « le premier » for the 1st, then « le deux, le trois… ». Phone numbers can be said digit by digit or in pairs (« soixante-dix-sept » = 77), so be ready for both. CLASSIC TRAPS: the first number you hear is not always the answer (« prévu à 14 h 10, retardé de 20 minutes » → 14 h 30); one message can have two numbers (a time AND a room); listen for « finalement », « non, pardon », « changé », « en retard ». AFTER: choose at once and move on; these items should take only a few seconds. If you missed it, guess: there is no penalty for a wrong answer in the TCF. You can do this: numbers are pure practice!
